Oh, I see xD, I'm way behind on my machines.
So maybe let me put it this way:
I don't like the second to last variant because it mixes the logic of highlighting the background. It should either be highlighted when active (ie only one of the spindle buttons can be highlighted at any time) or highlighted when the button is eligible to be pressed.
[edit]
I guess on the usual machine panels the button is a certain fixed color (ie green for M3,M4 and red for M5) and then there is an indicator in/around that button to indicate if the respective state is active. That is how I implemented it on my DIY panel.
[edit2]
Thinking about this some more actually makes me dislike buttons that change color all together. So the basic button color should remain the same and only a small part of it should change as an indicator of its state. Which is probably why I like the first behaviour shown the best. I hope that makes sense.

Just as a text like visible in the preview area for a loaded program, or with "buttons" as shown in you screen?
With button makes a lot more work.
I put in on my ToDo list for the German LinuxCNC meeting.

I do not think that that widget is Touch Screen user friendly.
That was exactly the reason I made ICON VIEW File Selection.
