So I tested the RTAI beowulf image - as expected latency is 1/5th of RT, so perfect. And the GUI looks really nice :)

There are some rough edges for beginners - but I'm sure they will be ired out: No CNC menu, so latency-histogram needs to be started from commandline "~/linuxcnc-dev/scripts/rip-environment latency-histogram". Same for stepconfwizard etc.

Overall a pleasent thing to work with. Good job!

I only did a run in place LinuxCNC for the RTAI kernels because there are no upgradeable Buster packages for RTAI.
I am not sure if make install-menus is still valid, I will have a look tomorrow.

As I played around a bit more, another question rises: How did you get the python qt stuff of linuxcnc working on beowulf? Is this already fixed in 2.9 and it would be good idea to build 2.9 on RPi, too, as I did not get theses things working on 2.8?

Beowulf was made as a distribution upgrade from ASCII. It worked flawlessly.
As an experiment I did the same today from Stretch to Buster and it worked as well.
I do intend to get RPi4 to have a bit of a play.
