Are NEMA 23 Steppers suppose to run hot was created by caprio
I'm setting up my new electronics for my mill. I have the basic configuration working with a paraport.
I haven't run any programs yet just going through the configuration and making sure everything works.
I noticed that all three of my steppers and very hot. I can only hold my hand on them for a few seconds.
This doesn't seem right. I'm guessing the holding torque may be in play here.
I'm using the DM542A driver with NEMA 23 500oz steppers.
Thanks for the feedback.

Have you set the correct current settings on the drives? You could set SW4 to off to give you half current when the motors are stationary

Stepper docs say they are rated at 4.2 amps and 3.78 volts.
I'm using a power supply voltage of 33 VDC. The DM542a says it can handle
between 20-36VDC.
DM542 Driver switches are set to 4.2 amps.
I'm going to back them off to 1.9 amps.
Some post I've read indicate they can run hot and won't damage them.

Yes they can run quite hot with no prob say about 50C But have you set the switch to 50% current I think it might be SW4

As Clive s referred to...

2) Standstill current setting
SW4 is used for this purpose. OFF meaning that the standstill current is set to be half of the selected dynamic current and ON meaning that standstill is set to be the same as the selected dynamic current.

To answer the question: Yes.
Steppers do get hot, and they get hottest when stationary.
I would imagine that the insulation is rated to 100C, and possibly 140C.
You can't touch 60C for very long without damaging your fingers.
