Well, technically HAL knowns nothing about X/Y/Z/A, everything in HAL is numbered (in many cases arbitrarily.)

I agree, HAL is dealing with joints, which are numbered - motor.0.pos-cmd etc. Assignement of joints to axis is done in kinematics module, which is loaded in HAL as a whole function, HAL has no effect to it. That is how I understand it.
