steplen is a parameter rather than a pin. So it can’t be part of a net.
Have a look at pwmgen instead.

I will have to look at the comp to understand how I can use this in my application. I'd like to be able to just input a on time and a frequency or off time. Right now it's clear as mud.

You won't need the conversion function with pwmgen either.
