42V is the absolute maximum rating for that chip, working voltage should be 24V or thereabouts, but i am also sure i have them at 27V with no issues. Still i would not use them with 36V, but that is only my advice.

It seems the people use them at 36V but 6V of over-voltage is
likely pretty easy to generate when decelerating especially with
switching supplies and their tiny output capacitors
