Not sure what's wrong the A/B signals are not quadrature.
(they change at the same time, this is not possible in quadrature)

it looks like I have either the wrong or a defective encoder. I'll order another one. thanks anyway for the help

How are they wired? A shared pull-up or pull-down resistor would do that, I think. (you can't share pull-up / pull down)

The encoder previously had a connection for the index signal. now i have a new one without this connection and it works as it should
