OK, when you say "on both the drives" do you mean the dip switches on the control board?

What control board?
Do you have one of those TB6560 drive thingies with 3 or 4 drives on it?

This is a JP-3163B control board. Factory Chinese 6040z. I also found a site giving the DIP microstepping positions but none of them correspond to what I see in my machine. Now this machine is a "new to me" from a frustrated first owner so who knows, he may have changed something and not remembered to tell me, etc. The image of the control board is from my machine.
