I have a newer image that is stable (been up nearly a year 24/7) with an RPI3 and a 7C80, 7C81 or 7I90, but I dont know if it will work on a RPI2 (is the SPI interface identical?, that is will hm2_rpspi work on a RPI2? )

I started with this:
unofficialpi.org/Distros/RealtimePi/
and got it working, it did not go with stock /boot/cmdline.txt. Now I'm trying to satisfy the dependencies... MAN that thing is SLOW. Maybe my sd card sucks, but this thing is still seriously slower than pentium2 with very old ide disk. But once it can run hal it may be useful.
@PCW: Is the version 3 good enough with opengl to run its own axis display? Well, those RPI "shields" look a lot like a problem solver, I'm quite interested.

OpenGL is not bad _IF_ you enable hardware OpenGL support, software OpenGL is hopeless...
Speed on my RPI3 is a bit slower than a Atom D525 but not unacceptable.

I have good results speeding rpi3 by using ssd. Finding a reliable USB to ssd took much longer than expected but finally I came to:
de.aliexpress.com/item/X800-2-5-inch-SAT...l-B/32791789269.html
Speeds up a lot and until now could handle all ssds I tried.
