My machines are set up with Samba and Avahi.
So if the machines are turned on they appear in my Mac finder, and I save G-code files direct from the CAD/CAM to the nc_files folder on the machines.
Thos also works from Inventor running in a Windows VM on the Mac, or from the LinuxCNC VMs.
So, yes, Samba works well, and it works even better with Avahi set up.

I also use samba on all linuxcnc machines to be able to copy nc files from my windows workstation.
Samba setup is so that all copied files are converted to lowercase so that axis finds them if windows creates upper case file names.
Wake on lan and vnc server are also very handy, there is no need to go to the garage to test things...
My garage is a separate building, the cable length is below 50m and there is a simple HP 1G router on both ends.
