Hello LinuxCNC Community,

I'm planning to set up a CNC control system using LinuxCNC and am considering utilizing a Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 15-Inch Laptop for this purpose. Before proceeding, I have several questions and would greatly appreciate insights from those with experience in similar setups.

1. Hardware Compatibility:
Real-Time Performance: Given that LinuxCNC requires real-time capabilities, is the IdeaPad Slim 3's hardware suitable for achieving the necessary real-time performance? Has anyone conducted latency tests on this model?
Peripheral Connectivity: Does this laptop provide sufficient ports (USB, Ethernet) for connecting CNC hardware interfaces, such as Mesa cards or other motion controllers?

    2. Linux Compatibility:
Driver Support: Are there known issues with running Linux distributions on the IdeaPad Slim 3 15 Inch Laptop, particularly concerning components like the keyboard, touchpad, or Wi-Fi? I've come across reports indicating that on the IdeaPad Slim 3, everything but the keyboard and touchpad work using Manjaro and POP OS.
Distro Recommendations: Which Linux distributions have been successfully installed on this laptop model without significant hardware compatibility issues?
3. Performance Considerations:
Processing Power: Is the CPU in the IdeaPad Slim 3 adequate for handling the computational demands of LinuxCNC, especially for complex machining tasks?

Generally laptops are not recommended.
The one you are trying to spruik is mainly useless as there is no ethernet port. Officially Linuxcnc doesn't support USB for realtime tasks.

Read this:
linuxcnc.org/docs/2.9/html/getting-start...em-requirements.html

Odroid have very good x86 platforms, far far better value than a Rspaberry Pi:

I've been using a H2 Plus with a Mesa Ethernet card for years.

A SFF ex corporate machine made in the last 10 years will work fine.

Tommy has a thread regarding laptops he has had success with.

Pretty sure this is "AI" spam, been waiting 4 days for "her" to come back and add spam links ...

Still, here is the link to tested laptops, just in case i am wrong:

Edit:
I had a Lenovo IdeaPad slim 3 with the Ryzen 7 5700U 8 core processor, gave it to a friend, but
-Linux Mint 22 everything works out of the box, WiFi and BT included
-Latest version of Tuxedo OS works properly
-Latest Parrot OS works properly
Hence the above "everything but the keyboard and touchpad work using Manjaro and POP OS" is extremely suspicious, as i am sure no laptop has keyboard issues with most Linux distros.
