I've got all the electronics connected up and working, ready to fit to a lathe. This orient part works as it should. The PID varies the commanded speed to the motor as expected. The closer the motor gets to its final position, the slower it's commanded to go.
I've only got an older style VFD, and it wont respond as quickly as I'd like for accurate orient positioning. I'm trying to find out if a new vector type VFD would be better.
Good luck with your project.

I know it's been awhile, but wanted to let you know that the newer drives can handle the faster direction changes pretty well. My Emerson Commander SK is switched into a high accel mode for orientation 0.1 seconds per 1000hz and it does a nice job. I have orientation rpm limited to 200 in the pid.

Adam, good to know you had success with this. Omid, I have not looked at this for ages, but did get it working quite well with a newer vfd. I'll attach the hal and ini file I was using, but it really needs re-doing (lots of commented out bits etc).

Great, thank you! I have a new Hitachi SJP1, so will be ok in that department.
