I partly used DMX because I found it in purple, and that made it more obvious in the wiring scheme. And I like to wire in orange, pink and purple so that nobody makes assumptions about what a wire is.

[Or even some generic two-core shielded microphone cable. RS485 is, by design a fairly robust protocol, so you don't need to spend a fortune on premium shielded cables to get reliable performance.

I have connected pc with huanyang vfd with this adapter

with simple cat5 cable (about 4 meters length) without termination resistors
and works very good.
One usb adapter i have tried had issues.
