You are absolutely right about most of that, and it’s certainly many months in the future.
But one nitpick: what I want is not a perfectly synced machine/CAM system. It’s more a system where we don’t have to care about the sync. But let’s leave that aside for now. I can revisit it in due time and see whether it works the way I think it will or not.

Hi,
I want to give a quick update on my work, the belt for the Spindle encoder has been replaced.
Two belts have been installed same as RotrySMP has done. But I thought about this and think it is les helpful as I originally thought.
As this belt will likely “Dye” of old age, in that case the other one will also be brittle due to age already, but now it is in there and it does not hurt anything.
With the Spindle in good shape now I could test the full machine. Everything worked fine. Interestingly most of the “extended” machine was not even conked to the controller but controlled by directly wired relays, even with a notable amount of safety by locking functions out.
This includes the full tool changer, variator and back gear.
At this point I noted down some of it and started tearing the electronics and pneumatic bay down.
I also dismounted and shortened the electronics box.Their seems to be space for everything in the former pneumatics bay. If that is the case I will use the electronics box for tool holders, chucks and that stuff, if I need more space I will use that space as needed.
Also I did make up a bit of a control panel in CAD and made a cardboard variant.
I think that is it so far.

Wow, you hit the ground running on this one Martin. Great progress.
I also thought my cabinet had lots of space... until I mounted everything and started wiring it up. Ended up having to stack a relay board (soon to be replaced by the second 7i84) above the 7i92 as I ran out of space. I guess I have taken a lot of space with the spindle VFD, pre and post filters and brake module.

Slower than I would like to. The workshop is really uncomfortably cold right now. But the control panel is almost done, and the “packaging,” or what goes where, is almost done as well. I will make a few photos when I am in the shop the next time and post here again.

Hi,
so in the last weeks it is really hard to convince myself to even go to the shop — “badly isolated to small of a heater,” you know how it is. Anyway, I still have a bit of an update.
I worked mainly on the control cabinet and its mounting. In the attachments you can see the box made from laser-cut and pre-bent steel plate, and the arm to mount the cabinet.
I decided to take it in the front of the machine. I reused the foot of the holder that mounted the original one in the back. Because the cabinet now is in the way of the tailstock, it had to be articulated twice. Simple rotation would not have worked.
It’s not quite together yet, but you may still see how it is supposed to go together.
It will be some weeks until I will be able to paint it (again, it is too cold).
I think that’s it for now.

Not on this side of the world where the the temp is hitting 40 deg c and beyond! We holidayed in Canada over Xmas so went from -20c to plus 40c which took a week to get back accustomed to!Good weather for welding
Nice progress.

At no time did it hit -20°C here, at -10°C it was plenty cold enough for me. It has gotten warmer the last days. The next update on the machine will be very soon (at least I hope).
