Mesa card combination for gantry router was created by SaltyPaws
I am planning to use LinuxCNC for a 4'x8' gantry router table using clearpath stepperkiller servos (step+dir). I am looking to use mesa and linux cnc to drive the system. I have spent the last few nights doing research, but the many available mesa cards (love the choice) can be a little confusing.

These are some of the posts I used but I consulted many other resources:
forum.linuxcnc.org/27-driver-boards/3239...-vs-7i76e-comparison
forum.linuxcnc.org/27-driver-boards/33432-mesa-advice-please

These are my requirements:
1) Ethernet based so I can use small fanless PC to drive
2) 6 step/dir outputs (XYYZA and one for laser cutter)
3) Spindle speed control
4) >20 inputs and >20 outputs
5) 24V signal and output

I came up with 50 pin and a 25 pin solutions:
50 pin board solutions:
1) 7I93 + 7I47 +7I64 (89+69+198) =356 IO count; 24 in, 24 out (5V)
2) 7I93 + 7I47S +7I84 (89+79+79) =247 IO count: 32 in, 16+3 out (5V/24V)
7I93 Ethernet Anything I/O card (89)
7I47 12 Channel motion oriented RS-422 interface (69)
7I64 24 in 24 out isolated I/O card remote real time I/O (5V signals) (198)
7I47S 8/12 Channel motion oriented RS-422 interface with analog out (79) (6 Step/Dir) 5V signals (79)
7I84 32 in 16 out isolated 10-32V remote isolated real time I/O (24V signals) (79)

25 pin solutions:
3)7I92H + 2x7I76 (89+2*119)=327 IO count: 2*32 in, 2*16 out (24V)
4)7I92H + 7I76 + 7I78 (89+119+69)=277 IO count: 32 in, 16 out (24V)
7I76 5 Axis STEP / DIR - spindle - 48 isolated I/O for 25 pin Anything I/O (119)
7I78 4 axis STEP/DIR -spindle-SSerial expansion port for 25 pin Anything I/O (69)

When looking at the requirements above, option 3) 7I92H + 2x7I76 seems to be the best fit, in terms of ethernet, IO count, step/dir count and 24V. Did I overlook anything in my analysis? Can I resonably expect to get 7I92H + 2x7I76 to play nice with LinuxCNC?

A 7I92 +2 7I76's is a standard config
Another option is a 7I76E + a 7I76 or a 7I76E + a 7I78
Yet another is a 7I76E+ the cheap ubiquitous ebay 5 Axis bob
The advantage of a 7I76E over a 7I92+7I76 is that you have 2x 25 pin expansion ports
left rather than 1 with 7I92 + 7I76

If you just initially bought a 7i76e you could get you router up and running and later add another card to run your laser (which might not be as simple as you think with LInuxCNC). That way you tackle the project logically and not spend any more than you needed to until you get the back of the project (router) broken.

I have decided to go with the 7i76e and 7I76 combo. I may indeed reserve the 7I76 for the laser, but will get them upfront, so I have enough space in my control cabinet. I don't think I need the 2nd expansion card, but then again I may want to play with glass scales in the future, who knows. Thanks for the responses!
