Hello, plan to convert a Modig MD5000 from TNC150 to Linuxcnc.
Planning to use 5i25 + 7i77 kit after talking with one that made a similar conversion.
My first question concerns the encoder. How many pulses can you recomend?
My plan is to reuse my Contraves DC servon. Is there anybody who has tips on 6mm axle pulse encoder?
Attaches images with dimensions and mounting on current sensors with wrong signal.

I think most common are 2500ppr or there about, the ones I have on my AC servos are 3000ppr.

How fast do the servos rotate? If you use the 7i77 then I think you can count pulses at 10MHz.
Also calculate what spatial resolution your encoders give you. Much less than the width of an atom and you are wasting money

Max. motor speed is ~3000 RPM / 60 = 60 RPS. Encoder PPR is 3600
Max. frequency output of encoder at ~3000 RPM. 60 RPS x 3600 PPR = 180 Hz.
The pitch of the ball screw is 5mm / rev.
3600ppr the encoder 50 tenths of mm. 3600/50 = 72pp / 0.1mm

I get 3600PPR @3000 RPM = 50 RPS* 3600 = 180 KHz A/B signals and 720 KHz count rate (4X 180KHz)
at 5 mm/turn and 4X3600 counts per turn that's ~0.347 microns per count

Difference between 1500ppr and 3600ppr encorder is 57.6 usd.

I would say that the more resolution you have the better, up to the point that you overload the counter.
720 kHz is comfortable for the Mesa counters (I think they can go to 10MHz with the filters turned off)
What sort of accuracy are you hoping for? Your PID loop needs a few counts error to work with. 0.3um encoder resolution probably translates to no better than 5um positional accuracy. 1500 ppr would thus be about 10um accuracy. I would imagine that this is OK for a mill, good for a router and a bit worse than you would hope for on a lathe.
You might want to consider a belt reduction between the motor and the ballscrew. You can gain resolution and force at the expense of speed. 3000rpm and 5mm pitch is a top speed of 250mm/sec. For a big router that might seem slow, for a small lathe it might seem fast.
