I dont think there have been any 8I20 firmware changes for at least 5 years

I’m not sure when mk forked but I haven’t seen anyone using SS on their beaglebone so I wouldn’t be surprised if it were really that old.

The 8i20 predates "discovery" so there is a set of dummy smart-serial data in sserial.h:
github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/blob/master...tmot2/sserial.h#L227

Maybe look for differences there?

When I first discovered the issue, the MK fella was trying some things to bring SS closer to LCNC. Apparently he already tried swapping the SS header file. Not really sure why that didn't work but at the time I was trying to figure out whether SS was broken in general, or my hardware was no good, which neither really was the case.

Apparently MK is rather far behind in Mesa/hm2 changes other than hm2 mods to make other things work.

The MK/LCNC situation is a bit of a bummer. On one hand MK has some neato stuff going on with socfpga's on another hand they've lost sync with LCNC improvements/updates.
