On Power all 3 led (1 yellow and two red ) blink a tenth of a second and then only the yellow one is lit.
My 40 pin cable is a preconfigured cable round about 15 cm long. I look for a short cable or make one, there should be some old disc cables  around....

Yes, the cable should be about 1.5" long

Also beware that IDE disk cables come in two flavors:
ancient 40 pin cables, and newer 80 pin cables (with 40 position receptacles ends)
the 80 wire cables will not work

Actually I was thinking of using the 80pin cables but eventually I found a 40 pin cable.
(They are getting rare...)
I checked every connection and: The 7c80 responds!
The lenght of the cable was the reason, I would have never thought that could be an issue.
The card answers
unable to set bpw32, fallback to bpw8

and then it shows the General configuration information.

What does that bpw32 and bpw8 mean? Have I already flashed the card and it uses the fallback EEprom?
Should I try to write the 7c80d.bit file?

"unable to set bpw32, fallback to bpw8"

Just means the RPI SPI interface cannot use 32 bits per word
so must use 8 bit transfers instead

This is not significant

I unsoldered the male pins and solder a female header under a pitray compute module 4 carryer board at $ 20. Now the HDMI output is in the right place
