Hi All

Just wondering is it normal for a 7i76e to take a couple of minutes from turning on before you can connect linuxcnc to it it?

Thanks

Dave

Should take no longer than about 2 seconds from power-up to
ability to co communicate (mostly link negotiation with host)

Hmm that is very strange and a little worrying.

I start the PC and leave it sat there. Then power up the 7i76e. If I try and start LCNC before lights CR3,CR4,CR5 and CR6 start flashing then i get network unreachable and the error message below. It take almost 2 minutes to go from power on to getting the lights flashing. See video link below. Power on is at 5 seconds in and the CR5 and 6 LEDs don'tlight up until circa 1:40. Once connected all is fine and seems to work.

Any ideas what this might be? the board is new and only setup as a bench test at the moment.

Thanks

Dave

Looks like it started up normally but the Ethernet link was not established for
a long time.

It could be a faulty 7I76E or a problem with the cable or PC Ethernet interface

You might try swapping the Ethernet cable or seeing if you get link lights
(on the 7I76Es RJ45 connector) on another Ethernet connection.

Also does the delay correlate with the PC power up or 7I76E?

Thanks PCW

Tried a different ethernet cable with no change.

I tried pinging the connection during the 7i76e power up and got the network unreachable again.

Looking at the network settings it was showing the network present, but not connected. When i pressed connect i could then open LCNC and connect straight away so looks like it is a strange issue with LCNC.

I was turning the 7i76e on after the PC has booted. Turning both on at the same time - as a plan to do for the final machine build seems to work ok. So fingers crossed that will fix it.

Thanks again for the help

Possibly "auto" is not enabled on the host Ethernet

Possibly something else is trying to connect to the Ethernet, and when it times out and gives up, the 7i76 connects.

It probably a good idea to look at your /etc/network/interfaces file and also the iptables.
(I would offer more help on the latter, but all I know is what I learned with a 10 minute Google when I needed to look into it)

The interfaces file does not match the suggestion in the docs:

linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/man/man9/hm2_eth.9.html

I think that the wait is the timeout on a DHCP request. (Because clearly the 7i76E does not do DHCP)
