Yes, the red init led is on only when linuxcnc is closed.
What would be your suggestion going foreword given the info at hand?
Is the power chip a common smd that could be changed by someone with enough knowledge or is it a specialised component?
Bare in mind that I'm in Europe. I don't know how mesa operates here.

The driver chips for STEP/DIR 0..3 are a 74ACT540 and a 74ACT541 (TSSOP package). The driver chip for STEP/DIR 4 is a 74ACT04. All of these are inexpensive
and commonly available.
If there has been a 5V overvoltage, the ACT parts are the first to go...
