7i96 Error finishing read.

Worked on a low latency laptop today. Yeh, I know laptops are poor candidates for lcnc... but
HP Pavillion i5. Latency < 20,000
We were getting error finishing read
I added the coalescing stuff to /etc/network/interfaces perĀ  hm2_eth man page.
Still could not solve it.

Has anybody got an idea on how to fix this?
Or is it just a laptop thing?

Try another 5V power.
Otherwise another laptop ! :)
Use latency test and histogram, add --show for histogram.
Also try 2000000 servo period, with 500 P value for PID.

Typically if you get the "Error finishing read" message you have
either lost contact with the 7I96 (power issues or the like)
or too many packets have timed out.

To check for timed out packets, look at the tmax values:

halcmd show param *.tmax

These are in units of CPU clocks

The default timeout value is 80% of the servo thread period
and the default error tolerance settings allow 10 errors in
a row before giving up and reporting the error, so it's usually
really bad network latency that causes the problem.

Forgot to mention, last year a i got a batch of "high quality" network cables, 5 meter ones had issues with dropped link to a Mesa 7i92, while 10 and 30 meter ones work perfectly near a plasma source.

Wonder if they were not paired correctly?

Never bothered to check, at 8 Euro a piece should have been good.
They did work but would drop the link at random, from immediately to half a day.
I just check the ping times for 2 to 5 minutes, if there is a difference in response times i just throw the damn thing. I can not risk using it for anything.

BTW, the 30 meter one is not made by the same company, it was much cheaper but everything seemed better quality despite the price and it works perfectly as it is attached to my big plasma, and despite having 20 meters of it rolled in the same making a big inductor.

I went crazy with a 7i80 that did not want to start, I had to turn it off and on several times to be detected and then work, this with a nuc i3 with bad latency.
i got an i7 pc with very good latency and i got the error like Rod.
usual linux19 mx system with qtplasmac and no other network connection. I have tried three network cables with no changes. after this I took a 5i23 that I had in a drawer and it works up to 8 khz we hope the plasma does not burn it ... but it is without hf I am confident.

If you have that much trouble, it's likely a bad or damaged 7I80.

What model was it? (there are some 7I80s that had bad
EEPROMs so would not have valid MAC addresses when cold)

Thanks Peter, now I use the 5i23, then if the 7i80 works I will need to do something else. I don't lack time :-) it is a 7i80db 16 I had asked for the hd but the seller has seen fit to give me what he had ...

Yeah that's a early 7I80DB so likely has a Microchip 93C46
which it turns out is faulty at low temperatures (at least it does not
work reliably with the Ethernet chip and low temperatures)
