An off topic question. Why so many people like pathpilot ? Probebasic is very similar and can be customized ?

I have no idea either. QTdragon_hd is also very good, well documented and part of the linuxcnc core. Very New but bugs are being fixed very quickly

For starters,....

Probebasic does not fit my resolution (1600 x 900)

I also use the built-in conversational and would miss them.

For my lathe, the toolchanger uses a simple period measuring system and two signals to determine which tool to index to, and it just works.

Also, I simply like using pathpilot, it's uncluttered and clear, there a a few niggles, but no biggies...

I'm sure that if was in the right mind to get into any of the alternatives I wouldn't look back

At the moment these positives outweigh the negatives, but as time goes by and pp becomes increasingly isolated my opinions may well change.

Cheers folks....

@PCW

lol....I tried that before I decided to modify the board firmware....I get the error below;-

wrote rtapi_app pid 7882 to /sys/fs/cgroup/cpuset/rt/tasks
hm2: loading Mesa HostMot2 driver version 0.15
hm2_eth: dlopen: /home/operator/tmc/rtlib/hm2_eth.so: undefined symbol: rtapi_spawn_as_root
tormach_mill_mesa_440.hal:10: waitpid failed /home/operator/tmc/bin/rtapi_app hm2_eth
tormach_mill_mesa_440.hal:10: /home/operator/tmc/bin/rtapi_app exited without becoming ready
tormach_mill_mesa_440.hal:10: insmod for hm2_eth failed, returned -1
HALCMD ini file /home/operator/tmc/configs/tormach_mill/tormach_440_7i92.ini load failed with config file tormach_mill_mesa_440.hal
Shutting down and cleaning up LinuxCNC...

When I replace the files with the original ones everything is fine..,

Dunno what is wrong at this point, I did remember to check the run as executable in permissions.....

Is there any chance of a copy of the schematic for the 7i96s? or is that asking too much ?  it would help me a lot if I choose to modify the board.

thank you.

hm2_eth is not needed for new module support
If LinuxCNC hostmot2 works you will have support
for all new modules.

Also did you build hm2_eth on the same platforms as pathpilot?

oh! my bad.... i jusdt copied and pasted from a newer version of linuxcnc on different pc......

Forgot about dependancies and so on....I'm not used to linux..

Think I might have wasted a bit of your time....

I'll have to do some research on how to build Hostmot2....

Sorry......

qtdragon I mentioned is NOT probebasic. It is included in the core v2.9 version. Probebasic isn't
It has probing and some conversational
but I think the lathe is still to come...
It also supports different resolutions. You could run a sim to check howw it works for you.

Help me obi wan kenobi, you're my only hope!

so,...i can flash my 7i96s with ease now, i have tried the 7i92t project and the 7i96s project as downloaded...

I can ping the board, I can use newname and rename the board but when i try mesaflash readhmid, write or program, it seems to hang,

I get some user led activity but then nothing, ...readhmid reports nothing and if i boot using pathpilot it quits on a fatal error ...

is there anything on the KS8851 side of things that i might have corrupted? as i guess this is where the board name is stored and things went south after I changed the name...I can still change the name without issue and have tried various combos of upper and lower case.7I96S...7i96s  etc...

any ideas?...

sorry to be a continual pita....

ian

So mesaflash works to flash the card but readhmid does not work?

If so I would rename the card 7I96S, install standard firmware (7I96s_d.bin)
and try again

mesaflash does not appear to work, but i can ping and rename the board..

I flash the board from efinity and then need to mesaflash the bit file to save it to eeprom,...mesaflash looks like it starts to work but then everything hangs, no confirmation either...

I'm using the latest linuxcnc buster download too..

I will try the above though....thank you
