I think what you need to confirm is how many encoder or serial channels you are willing to give up to obtain the extra step gens.Let PCW know this and he will help.
It would seem you can't have all the encoders & all of the serial channels and the extra 3 step gens.
There are only so many functions that an FPGA can have.

I am ready to give up encoders. However, i am curious if parallel port can also be used for extra step gens?

Yes it can, although those will be software steppgens, meaning limited step rate that hugely depends on what latency the PC can maintain, usually you can get 10000 to 50000 steps per second.
If that is enough for what you need, then you can get 6 stepgens from a single parallel port, and 5 inputs.

Thanks for your reply. This means stepgens using parallel connector on the 7i95 in BoB are software stepgens? I thought 7i95 produces them in real time.

The stepgens on the 7I95 expansion connector are hardware stepgens.
I think when you said "parallel" tommylight assumed you meant a
separate parallel port.
Here's a configuration for the 7I95 with 9 total stepgens, 6 on the 7I95 and 3
on the expansion port, pinned out for the common Sainsmart 5 Axis BOB.
I dropped the sserial ports to get it to fit:

Yes of course, when you mention parallel it is always referred to the parallel port, for Mesa we use header or IDC26 port.
Mesa header can do everything a parallel port can, at speeds of up to 10MHz/s for each pin (se above for parallel port speed), but can also do input or output on any of the 17 pins, and can have secondary hardware functions like PWM or stepgen or encoder inputs or....

Sorry for the trouble guys. Absolutely. It makes a easy replacement if one has a machine already on parallel port as pins can be mapped.
Need to connect spindle and its quadrature encoder on my existing parallel port machine with the 7i95 ID26 connector also. PWMgen is set at pin 1, spindle ccw at pin 5 and spindle cw at pin 4 of the BoB. Please guide.
