So the machine uses TTL quadrature encoders with glass scales. Any other info I need ?

Any information you can get on the drives would help. They appeared to be standard analog input drives but its not really clear. Can you contact the manufacturer and see if they have more detailed drive pinout/functional information?

The manufacturer sent two screen shots. I don't seem to be able to add multiple attachments so here's the first one.

Edit: I cant upload images at all for some reason. I will try with a different browser when I get a chance.

So the upload function is broken so here are links to the images sent by the manufacturer.

OK so on the controller interface cable there are differential encoder signals ( A, /A, B, /B ),
differential PWM signals (PWM and NPWM) a unknown signal (LS)
LS may be a drive enable signal but thats just a guess, more investigation is in order

All it all it should not be difficult to interface. but there are still some unknowns:

What is LS?

What is the PWM frequency (here's where a oscilloscope would come in handy)

It really looks like differential PWM in which case the PWM would be 50% for 0,
0% for negative full scale and 100% for positive full scale
