Okay, I fixed the limit fault (loose wire) and then restarted the computer and machine. When I did this I had control of the spindle through linuxcnc again, so looks like the problem is solved.

I will correct the speed control in reverse with the abs command. After this it will be time to start working on attaching the spindle encoder and then wiring that into the 7i76.

Thanks

No need to add an "abs" component, there is already a pin with the absolute speed on it.

Okay, I adjusted to hal file so that speed control is working correctly either direction. Now on to the encoder. I am attaching my hal file in case someone would like to see how I did it.

So I built the adapter to mount the encoder to the lathe, this is my first time posting pics so I hope this works as intended.

I need to wire the encoder into the 7i76 but have some questions. I see the that spindle encoder should be wired TB3 pins 7 through 12 as follows:

7 ENCA+
8 ENCA-
9 GND
10 ENCB+
11 ENCB-
12 +5VP

The encoder is from automation direct TRD-GK 1000-RZD incramental (quadrature) rotary encoder. The wiring printout for the encoder is:

Blue: 0v
Brown: Power supply
Black: OUT A
White: OUT B
Orange: OUT Z
Shield: GND

Some of these seem obvious on where they should go but others I am not sure. Again I searched the forum but could not find an answer on how these should be wired. If someone could point me in the correct direction I would appreciate it.

Also will I need to make any changes to my hal or ini file to get this encoder working?

Thanks

The 7i76 manual says that to use a TTL encoder you set the jumpers:
"ENCODER INPUT MODE
The 7I76s high speed encoder input can be programmed for differential or single ended mode operation. W4, W5 and W6 set the encoder input mode. When W4,W5,and W6 are in the right hand position, the encoder input is mode is differential. When W4,W5, and W6 are in the left hand position, the encoder input mode is single ended or "TTL"."

I believe that you connect encoder A to ANCA+. You can look at the raw pin value with Halmeter. The A-channel is GPIO16. (I think) You should see it change as you rotate the encoder. (You should also see the encoder counts value change if A and B are correct)

Your HAL file seems to have the required encoder logic in it, so things ought to work as soon as the encoder is wired.

Ok, so here is my first stab at it:

1st I make sure the 7i76 is set up for single ended encoder input
2nd I will wire the following together:

Blue 0v goes to ground
Brown power supply goes to +5VP
Black OUTA goes to ENCA+
White OUTB goes to ENCB+
Orange OUT goes to IDX+ (Pin 13)
Shield Ground will connect into the main grounding bar

If this sounds right I will give it a shot tomorrow.

Thanks
