I'm thinking about retrofitting a Haridnge CNC lathe over the LCNC if I can't get the Fanuc OT-B system working. Wondering if anyone knows if there are ways to control the servos using the Fanuc drives. The axis servos are Fanuc 10S (can grab numbers tomorrow) and the spindle is a Fanuc 6S A06B-0754-b270#3000.

I assuming you can run the spindle off a VFD but what about the encoder?

I see that Pico has 2 Fanuc encoder converters. Would these work with my motors? FYI they are all red cap Fanucs.

The axis servos are fanuc a06b-0315-b003#7000.

I sent Jon at Pico an email regarding compatibility with his boards.

If you cannot use the built in encoders (recommended) you should be able to replace them with standard quadrature encoders and use a readily available servo drive. I have done that in the past.

Still, using the original servo/encoder/drive would be the best way.

Fanuc Servo Amplifier, A06B-6058-H334, A16B-1100-0330/03A for the axes

Fanuc 6S A06B-0315-b003#7000 motors on the axes

Not sure if that helps anyone but thats what I have.

There is a module for the Mesa cards that works with some models of Fanuc encoders (the serially-communicating absolute ones).

I cleaned the gunk off the motor and low and behold it is a pulse encoder. On the x at least. I would hope z would be the same.

It appears to be an aa64 encoder like that which is described in the link you sent me. What Mesa card is that Andy?

The Module can be included in the firmware for any of the FPGA cards as far as I know. I am not sure if it appears on any standard firmwares.

The Fanuc spindle motor is a permanent magnent motor. You will need a vfd that can control a pm motor. They are not easy to tune. I have a Hitachi wj series controlling a 6s motor on a mill. Last I checked there is no encoder feed back to the drive available. Yaskaw a, Fuji and mistsubishi also make drives that will control a pm motor. They might by now have incorporated feed back. It's not necessary.
