I have acquired this little baby that has done literally one job after it was purchased and left in a corner for... well... for me to say "hay I'll take that home so we don't have to trip over it anymore"
I have it setup on Linux and it seems to be working perfectly. I would like to setup endstops but I wanted to ask. Is it necessary to have Min and Max micro switches for X and Y axis?
I come from the 3D Printer world that generally just uses one stop and travel distance. I see in the config it has distance for each axis so I am sure it will work with just one.
I just wanted to make sure if there was any reason I should have + and - switches on X and Y before I start to make brackets and wire them.

you only need Home/Ref Switches
the Software ENDswitches / Workroom wont let you go over this limits

Thanks, I thought this was the case... I just wanted to make sure there was some other reason they are both needed.
All the googling on small Mills seems predominantly coming up with people putting on both switches for each axis... except Z of course.

you can Have all 6 Switches at one port
and then you are SAFE for Hypermill
like this Video shows

Having overtravel sensors can be useful on servo machines where runaway is a possibility due to component failure. They are less necessary (though do no harm) on a stepper machine where runaway is rather less likely.

Andy yeah in the end I am putting overall travel stops on X and Y.
The packet of switches had 5... so I will just go with Min on Z for the moment.

Ok I have setup endstops both on X and Y and just one on Z.
I have it all running and seem to be working and with verniers it is close to moving the amount it should. I just used a combination of guess/settings seen on web/sheer ass but hey it moves.
I don't know and can't really find any info or driver type and timing settings to put into the first page in StepConfig...
I finally found this ftp://machsupport.com/XMLs/ which I assume is where I keep seeing references to the Mach3 XML. I downloaded the Taig and the Sherline Metric just to see.
Now I assumed I could just open this with Stepconfig to import it but each time I try it just closes the Stepconfig Wizard without any errors?
Am i supposed to do another step?
I downloaded the Wheezy ISO and then run all the updates.
The version I am running is 2.8.0 pre1 4625 g8f279b8

Step ;ength just needs to be "long enough" there isn't any "tuning" to do as such with steppers.
Just use 5000, that is pretty much always long enough, and rarely too long.

Ok thanks... yeah I installed Mach3 on a PC and loaded the downloaded xml and come to the conclusion that what I have must be right (enough).
Cool now onto the Latency issue see if I can stop that from poping up.
Just a question on Latency... if I have issues how does that manifest into a machining job?
Am at risk of just loosing steps?
Or bigger issues like crashing the head?

You can just set the base thread higher to where it does not report latency issues any more.
I did use several times machines that displayed that while i was testing, but never noticed anything out of the ordinary happening, certainly no crashes, ever. Lost steps did not bother me as it was for testing only, sometimes for 2 to 3 days.
