I've been a Linux guy for years, so FreeCAD is the only game in town if you want CAD + CAM (with adaptive toolpaths, at least). I said this in the FreeCAD thread, but my experience is the CAD is pretty good, once you learn how to not make "fragile" models. The UI even seems fine to me, though there are plenty of folks who would disagree with that assessment, so YMMV.
The CAM still has some rougher edges, but I'm working on sanding off those that annoy me specifically- shameless self-promotion that making automagic adaptive roughing a reality is my current effort on that front. That's going to be soooooo nice to have.
I'd also suggest giving the weekly "unstable" builds a chance if you want to test FreeCAD- they get improvements/bugfixes well before the official releases and on average (IME) give a much better experience... with the occasional build that totally breaks something, so I always kept the previous week's build until I knew the current one didn't have anything critical broken in it*. YMMV, of course.
*past tense in that sentence only because due to the development work I've been doing I've been building my own "weekly" builds, not because I've stopped using the bleeding edge
I suspect you'll be happier without Windows/Fusion 360 based on your complaints, even if learning curves bite in the short term. The FreeCAD forum is fairly helpful if you run into problems.

Thank you dbtayl for the work you have put into FreeCAD. I stumble my way through coding so
I have a pretty good idea how much effort goes into making programs work. I liken it to one
beating their head against a wall until the wall finally cracks, Beat one's head against the wall
some more until they finally break through. But maybe that's just me. LOL

Thanks! Always nice to be appreciated, though I mostly posted that because I want folks to know that stuff is happening in the FreeCAD world- just 'cause it annoyed the snot out of you and crashed 3 months ago doesn't mean it's not noticeably better now (again, at least in the weekly builds).
I'm also just unreasonably excited about that particular feature... mostly because the lack of it has been creating tedium for my CAM workflow. But also- to your point- because from the outside it looks like a super complicate thing to do. Turns out it's been a ton of work, but pretty straightforward. The actual toolpath generation voodoo was already there, I "just" needed to wrap it up with code to automatically find where to machine. That much is at least intuitively "easy" ("cut away everything that is in the stock AND not in the model").

I think I've got a solution that won't entirely suck: Win 11 Enterprise LTSC
No AI, no features updates, no bloat, no MS store. 10 years of security updates.
I've been running W10 LTSC for a few years and it's what Windoze should be. Fast, clean, no garbage, no crashes, no surprises after an update. I bought a 5-pack of Win10LTSC licenses in 2020 and have had no issues on any of the installations.
CDW has a license for $200, but pckeys.uk has them for around 40 UK bongo-bucks and they get cheaper for multi-packs if you have a few PC's to do.
I don't know the difference between Enterprise LTSC, Enterprise N LTSC, and IOT Enterprise LTSC, but I know IOT allows you to remove a bunch of software/services during install.
I'll be doing some more research to pick a flavor, but this is the route I'm taking for those of us who need to remain on Win for F360 and other reasons.

Well it's official January 2026 Autodesk Fusion 360 will no longer support Windows 10 . Either switch
to Windows 11 or you can no longer use fusion 360.

I've only done one job in the last 12 months......
All my parts are sheetmetal and laser cut these days (or made in India or China), inserted about 300 nutserts today. Thank god I have a pneumatic tool!

Yes, sneaky buggers charged my card on the renewal. Wasn't planning to.rodw Do you still use Fusion 360? If not what are you using now?

Have you looked at onshape? Browser driven but no CAM. Free if you share your partsSo it's not just jumping over to Linux and Mac doesn't appeal to me.
The day Alibre Design and the software to connect the 3D scanners to get the data is in Linux, then I can switch away from Windows.

Yes, I have tested OnShape at the time when everything was free and you could choose which objects would be public, many years ago now.
Can use as a doodle to figure out a geometric problem/puzzle, but not something I would use for my hobby, where I want my source files with me and not public, so for that reason I rarely log into OnShape.
The FreeCAD gang should have a platinum medal for all the work they do, at the moment the CAM part is the one that appeals to me most there.

Crap that suck. 300 inserts yikes, how long before your hands stopped vibrating?

Used to do that on a weekly basis when I was installing playground equipment, the supplier would ship all the stuff up not powder coated and we'd spend time packing it all and shipping it off to the powder coaters then doing all the nutserts. Man there was a lot of double handling.

That sounds familiar. I add a fold in there too. Then package into a kit and label the bag. They look alright when done. This one was fully outsourced and they painted after nutserting but they look so much nicer if the nutsert goes in later.Used to do that on a weekly basis when I was installing playground equipment, the supplier would ship all the stuff up not powder coated and we'd spend time packing it all and shipping it off to the powder coaters then doing all the nutserts.
