EMC2 / Ubuntu 11.04 was created by stephencfrazier
Has anyone installed EMC2 with Ubuntu 11.04? I bought a new Dell Optiplex 390 to replace the generic PC that came with my mill. According to IT, the chip set in the Dell won't allow install of the 10.1 release of Ubuntu. 11.04 installs with no problems. I'm also trying to find out where best to download EMC2 from. I was sent a Ubuntu EMC2 Install disc by my mill manufacturer (Sherline) but it seems to only contain the Ubuntu install files. Thanks, Steve

Here is how to install EMC via various ways.

A poplar motherboard is the Atom 525 if you don't need more than one PCI slot and they are quite cost effective.
If your generic PC has good latency there is no reason to change it.

I just looked at the Dell Optiplex 390 it probably would make a nice desktop computer but it is way overkill for an EMC computer. Dell's have a bad reputation for latency which is important for CNC.

Thanks John. Wish I'd found this forum before I bought the new Dell. The motherboard on the old PC puked so that's why I bought a new machine. Dell is the standard vendor here. I have access to an HP Compaq dx2400 Microtower. It is a much older machine so, some lucky tech may be about to get a new Dell.

Just boot from the LiveCD and run the latency test for a while on the Compaq. If the numbers are good then it will be a good candidate for EMC.
