So Now I'm finally ready... Where do I start?

I have the driver box rebuilt and tested with my old software

I built up a dedicated Computer using the Intel Atom
D525 MB with 4gb Ram, 80 GB HD, and a dvd drive.

So now I'm ready to start making the Jump to EMC

I have a Sherline Mill and Lathe but not their electronics.
So should I just do a custom setup, or modify the Sherline ones?

Also any hints to help me make the smooth transition would be appreaciated

Note: I use Linux daily so I'm pretty good on that end of it all

Thank you

I would start with the latency test if you have not already.

Then as you have it working on your old software I would just take the settings from there and enter them into Stepconfig with the results of the latency test to create a new configuration.
You can then modify that configuration as needed.

A bit more info.

Drivers:
Lathe - 3 axis HobbyCNC Unipolar Board (Only using 2 axis)
Mill - Older 4 axis Xylotex 4 axis Unipolar Baoard (usinf all 4 axis)

Stepper Motors:
Lathe - Stock Sherline Stepper motor (NMB 23KM-K035-62V)
Mill - Keling KL23H276-30-8B Stepper motor

I turned off Hyper threading as it did improve the latency times.
(I forget the #'s now but they were all under 13,000 even while "abusing" the system)

It may be easier to just rebuild the configurations from scratch using
Stepconf and referring back to the Sherline configs if needed.

My old software was pretty limited on the config data that you set; Mostly just the
# of steps per inch etc, EMC has a bit more to enter. (Step Time, Step Space etc)
So I will need to read up on what to enter for those values.

There is a collection of stepper drive timings on the wiki:

wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Stepper_Drive_Timing

Using the Stepconf wizard might be a good way to get jumpstarted.
