Specifically LS-303

Does the 7i49 support these scales directly or is a digitizing interpolator (like the EXE 600 series) necessary?

If an interpolator is necessary, other than Heidenhain, what is working?

Thanks

The 7I49 is really for resolvers, it might be possible to change the firmware to read the Heidenhain encoders but its not trivial. Also the 7I49 analog inputs are not right for the 11 uA Heidenhain signals
You really want a current/voltage (trransconductance amp) front end. This is possible but requires changing lots of 0603 SMD resistors on the card.

So if you have the interpolator, keep it...

We've kicked around the idea of using a DSPIC as a cheap Heidehain interpolator but have never developed sufficient ambition to actually lay one out, maybe next year...

Also Andy Pugh has a resolver interface in a Arduino, Its firmware could be modified to read the Heidenhain signals

A resolver interface and a interpolator do very similar things, the main difference is that the resolver
interface uses a carrier (AC excitation) so is a little more involved than an interpolator which effectively has DC excitation

Great info PCW! Thanks so much.

Unfortunately I don't have an interpolator, execpt the one integrated into an old Elesta control.

I was thinking Arduino, checked their site and go-ogle, and came up empty.

Maybe Andy will chime in with his resolver solution, or is that documented somewhere on this site?

Are there any other non-Heidenhain (read less-expensive) off-the-shelf ways to interface Heidenhain linear encoders?

Thanks again

if you have time to search. Ebay often has heidenhain EXE interpolators for around $50.

I am not sure what the Heidenhains need, but some bits of that might help.
