You don't need this hardware when you use EMC. You can connect the drivers directly to the computer. No need a motion controller between PC and drivers.

I agree that it is rather redundant, and also limits the capability of the system... however, if a PC doesn't have a parallel port, it is one solution. (Although a slow one.)
Personally, I would like to use one of the fpga based cards with emc2, to get high speed.

I am a new user, my understanding, yes, PCs can do this directly but it seems that there may be challenges with having just the right PC to get good latency.
USB system like Arduino Mega that could buffer and run some gcode might be nice?
