I screwed UP!

While attempting to resolve a C compiler issue I decided to unintall the compiler which caused the system to crash and it will not boot. I can boot the 10.04 CD. I would like to know if I can fix this ??
I would be happy to extract my files and reinstall, but while running the CD, I cannot read the linuxcnc directory to copy them.

Please tell me how to at least save my nc files and config.

I could not figure out how to do a "rescue" boot so I just reloaded Ubuntu 10.04. I had nearly everything backed up. I will have to figure out how to reload some fonts but that shouldn't be too bad.
