runtime vs milling time

Under file>properties there is a mention of runtime.
For a file I was running today the runtime was said to be 44 seconds. Actual milling time was about three minutes with feed at 100%

Where does this difference come from or is it something completely different?

That number is simply the sum of the rapids and feed moves without any acceleration considerations. If your machine has good acceleration and the moves are long the number will be close. If your machine has slow acceleration and the G code has lots of short moves the actual time will be longer.

If this is a 3 axis mill are you using blending?

Ah, thanks John, that explains a lot. I read up on "Blending" and indeed, I do use it. Todays file requires a lot of moves within a small area.

it's 4800 lines of code running in 3 minutes in an area of about 2x3 inches.

Is there a way to get the actual milling time calculated in axis?

The only way is to run the file, this can be done in a simulator with the exact configuration as your machine. As you are interested in run time have you seen the cycle timer component?
