I am building a fourth axis to add to southwestern industery mill
like hass fourth axis
is there a stepconfig for just one axis
and does anybody have experience with interfacing two machines

Not really sure what you are trying to do, But for an one axis machine you can create a 3 axis with Stepconf and strip out the extra axis.
Stepconf is a great starting point for typical applications and from there you modify to your needs.
Why not just use a four axis setup?
There are sample configs up to 9 axis to get ideas from.

I have tried to strip other axis out in the .ini file and get error linuxcnc terminated with an error
