Will Ubuntu/LinuxCNC work with Windows 8?

I downloaded the ISO burned it to the CD, all done on my Windows 8 laptop. I then chose the Ubuntu OS at startup but it wouldn't comply. I tried again later and got a black screen.
I rebooted and tried just running it from the CD with no luck there either. Am I doing something wrong or is it incompatible?
Thanks

Depends, if you dragged and dropped the .iso file in a windoze program you may have created and .iso of an .iso, and the CD will be useless.
You need to ensure that the program you use actually burns a CD FROM the Live CD .iso and does not just treat it as a file to be generated into an image.

The other possibility is that your computer with 'windoze hate' installed has UEFI secure boot enabled
This is a ploy by microsoft under the guise of security to prevent any other operating system being installed or run on that computer.

See if your BIOS has an option to turn EFI boot and / or secure-boot off, when you can boot from the CD and 'Try Linuxcnc' you should be able to install

No, I didn't drag and drop. Just followed the instructions on the download page. Will try it again. Thanks!

Did you follow these instructions exactly? BTW, your graphic is too small to read...

I can make out a folder called /isolinux so looks as though it has burned OK

Check BIOS has sata mode set to AHCI and then look at the
UEFI boot situation
