What is the capability of Linux CNC

Hello, I'm sorry if this is answered somewhere, I've tried to find it on the forum and site.

I'm trying to figure out what I will need from a software and firmware stand point to build a CNC router.

I have seen CNC mills used in an industrial setting, the process they used:
A drawing/model/part is developed in a CAD package, imported to a CAM package, converted to GCode and the machine accepts the GCode and will run the instructions to produce the part.

My question is what part of this process doe LinuxCNC handle? Can I use Linux CNC to directly interface with my CNC mill and issue the commands to the stepper drives? Or am I going to need another on-board program which actually controls the motion? [Question 1]

The corollary is, how far back to the front end does Linux CNC go? Can I develop models or do I need to import models/drawings from somewhere else? [Question 2]

Thanks! I am very excited to build a CNC router, but I want to be sure to design and build it in a manner it can be controlled.

Hi

www.linuxcnc.org/docs/html/common/user_intro.html

I think all will become clear when you read the docs.
This probably the place to start for basic concepts.

regards
