color coded text editor was created by JRied
Hey guys... new user... but I really like the program.
We switched from Ubuntu to Debian and now the text editor no longer has those fancy colors to tell me if I have entered a coordinate (pink) a parameter (blue) or whatever.
Is there a way in the new software (mousepad) to change this?

It doesn't seem that mousepad supports syntax-highlighting. I think you may need to install a different text editor if you want that feature.
gedit seems to be available, and is known to work. (if you find the highlighting to be strange for G-code then there is a better scheme available at cnclub.ru)

Hi
sudo apt-get install gedit gedit-plugins
will get you back to the way you were with Ubuntu
A couple of the plugins are only in the jessie repo, depends what you use as to whether you need to backport it.
There are a few highlighting schemes for gcode, including the one Andy linked to
