LCNC won't boot was created by allenwg2005
Hey,

One step forward; four steps back is still in play with my setp-up!

I'm running 8.04 (Hardy Heron) with 2.5.2. (Can't upgrade the PC won't take it).

I often boot the PC and go to work (or continue working on setting the thing up) and all goes swimmingly.

There are other times when the PC will start to boot, go through the bois, and hang on the following dialog:

Starting up
No signature found.......

Or just plain

Starting up.......

Anyone know what's this thing is doing and how to fix it?

Not without a huge amount more info.

The only thing I can offer is that the "No signature found.." is to do with attempting to read drives and not finding a valid signature that IDs the disc in the boot record.

If you have overwritten partitions instead of wiping them, repartitioning / reformatting etc that could be the cause, especially if it was originally partitioned with windoze
and then you have done bits and pieces with gparted through the install process.

Thanks for responding.

I haven't been able to get the PC started yet this morning, it seems to be getting worse.
I've gone from occasionally having this problem starting up to occasionally getting the machine to start at all.

Let me share the following;
The computer has no other function than running my machine, it has no partition that I know of.
I loaded LCNC and over wrote or erased the Windows OS.

As I recall the install went pretty smoothly, I did start with 10.04 and had to back off to 8.04.
I suppose I could have done something while messing with that to create my issue here.

What information is required to better understand what's happening?

If I can get this up again I will make sure I have accurate copies of my ini and hal, and if I know what you need I will try and get the necessary data.

I just don't know what to do at this point.

Thanks again

Hi

In that case, as you have been chopping and changing, I would suggest that you backup your /home folder to USB and save your configs etc ( do this from the Live CD if necessary if the machine will not boot)

Then re-install 8.04 and choose an option to wipe the whole disk, then create one main partition plus a small (2GB max) swap partition.
Format everything and re-install the boot loader (have GRUB write to the MBR)

Hopefully that will clear things up, unless you actually have HDD errors.

I'm not aware of any HD issues, (we'll see).

Could you please share a link to instructions on how to do the partitioning you mentioned.
Or is that on the install disk?
It's been so long sense I installed this I can't remember a thing about it.

Thanks

Just select 'use entire disk' in the partitioning stage and it should delete everything and do it for you
