so I have a few questions but instead of just asking I thought I would do some snooping around and see if I could find the answers on my own but instead I found more questions. So now the question that I have is about gantry's and some kind of file in Linuxcnc that has to do with running an overhead gantry type machine. Can anyone share some light on this issue?

Tell us more about your setup and exactly what you are trying to do.
I have a gantry setup with two steppers running my y axis. I used the simplest method of running the two motors siamesed. This is very easy to setup in stepconf but has it's limitations like not being able to home the motors separately.
At some point I would like to separate the two motors and set everything up with home switches but for now this works well enough.
