Hi I'm looking to find out how to run polulu a4988 stepper drivers with linux cnc, what other circuits and stuff I might need, if I can just hook it strait up to the parallel port and if so how and all that good stuff.

a4988 , are straight forward , using step , direction and enable , follow any standard design for example reprap , and connect using a breakout board
to the parraell port , or follow the designs of the beaglebone black and the Machinekit project ,

You probably can wire directly to the parport. There is some risk of wiring errors damaging the parallel port, which is why a breakout board is normally suggested, but directly to the parport (configured to sink current) works too.
