Hey thanks for the replies. Here is a quick update of where I'm at with this project.

We have ordered a Tormach PCNC 770 mill. It should be arriving in the next month or so. We just received a mesa 5i25. We will be using LinuxCNC as a starting point. Right now I need to source a good PC for running linuxCNC. I found out that my normal home desktop (great for gaming) has a terrible latency issue. I tried disabling extra cores and power save options but it didn't help much. As far as STEP-NC I haven't made any progress. I've set up two sketchy FDM 3D printers to run from LinuxCNC on beaglebones to use for testing in the meantime.

Doesn't the Tormach come with a PC (and a 5i25) ?

For around $700 it does. We just ordered the card and figured we would use a random computer that we've already got floating around.
