Hi everyone, I am putting together my first CNC machine and need some very basic help to get started.

I am using the following:
LinuxCNC Ver 2.7.2
Break Out Board: PC4CNC Model C10
Driver : OMC-Stepperonline Model M542T
Stepper Motor: OMC-Stepperonline Nema-23 425oz 4-wire

When I tried to bench test X-axis stepper motor using the utility in "stepconf", the stepper got warm but did not turn in either direction.

I went back and read the C10 board manual and I do not understand the jumper settings.
Jumper X6 is set to 1-2 ( pins 2 to 9 output)
Jumper X7 is set to 1-2 ( common pin is Ground )
Jumper X4 is set to 1-2 ( I think doesnt apply, because I have pins 2 to 9 as output)

I think I have the wiring to the driver wrong, dont know how to check.
Pin 2 goes to driver port PUL+(+5V)
Pin com goes to drive port PUL- and jumpered to driver port DIR-
Pin 3 goes to driver port DIR+(+5V)

The driver switches:
1-3 are OFF (4.5A)
4 ON (? dont know what it does)
5-8 are on (400 steps/rev) 1/2 step?

The power supply is 24V

I checked the stepper motor wire pairs with Ohm meter, but I don't know which are + or - in the pair.

There 2 more ports on the driver (ENA+ and ENA-), which I dont know how to wire or if they are needed.forum.linuxcnc.org/media/kunena/emoticons/blink.png

Thank
Sal

Couple of things on the C10.
cnc4pc.com/Tech_Docs/C10R10_USER_MANUAL_V2.pdf

Looks like Jumper X7 should be 2-3 (common pin is +5 volt)

5 volts needs to be applied to the enable pin of the c10.

In this case on the driver the Pul+(+5 volts) would be jumpered together.
And then
Pin 2 goes to Pul- Pulse-
Pin 3 goes to Dir - Direction-
Perhaps this helps...
www.omc-stepperonline.com/download/pdf/5...ace_Users_Manual.pdf

4 ON (? dont know what it does)

Set the stepper motor idle current to half of full current when stepper is not moving.

(ENA+ and ENA-)

Can be left unconnected if not needed.

the default is half step so 400 steps per rev ,
follow as Rick has said and it will all work out ,
you can connect the ena + to 5v also at this time , but do not connect ena- to the parallelport pin untill you have it all working correctly , this becomes your amp enable at a later date , and allows Linuxcnc to control the stepper drive

set everything and get it working first an then look at bringing the velocity up to the correct speed last
also make sure that the dro's count in the correct direction ( they count up in + moves )
it's better to reverse the stepper motor wires if you need to reverse a motor direction , although you can do it in software
when setting up homing as a beginner it can get complicated , so doing it this way should reduce your headaches

your correct over the c10 jumpers , jumper for 0v common , and for pullups so x7 = pins 1&2 and x4 pins 2&3
and x6 pins 2&3

connect 5v+ to pul+ , dir+ , en+
connect the step & dir pins to the -pul & -dir ( pul = step )
connect all the en- to one wire , this will become the amp enable pin

when connecting estop and switches use normally closed types and connect between +5v and the breakout pin
use pin 13 for estop , limits and home switches make into 2 circuits , and connect the switches in series , and use pin 10 for limit and 12 for home .

i think that should keep you busy for a while , shout back with any querys

Thanks rickg and cncbasher,

I will go back re-read the manuals and give it a try.

OK I've read the manuals and rewired the Driver, now when I try to control the X axis I can feel the stepper trying to move.
I'm posting a photo of the setup, hopefully it helps.

The breakout board is now configured:
> Pins 2 - 9 are output
> Common to supply 5V
> Pins 2 - 9 are configured as Pull-Up ( does that mean that is supplies power when there is no signal ? )

I still get confused reading the M542T Driver manual, I thought that it uses High signal to Enable driver and Low signal to disable driver. I have 5V from the Common pin going to the ENA+ pin and the ENA- pin disconnected ( I checked the voltage on the ENA+ pin and it has 5V, I checked against the DB25 shield for ground ).

I checked the Stepper manual and I have the correct pair's, I guess it does not matter which pair is A or B

One last question, is there a simple way to check the output from the breakout board to see if the parallel port is working properly? I feel like I'm going blow up the driver or stepper by moving wires around.

Thanks for the help,
Sal

now when I try to control the X axis I can feel the stepper trying to move.

O.K. That would certainly indicate you are getting somewhere and the parallel port is working.
It could be you just have acceleration and velocity set too high. Go back and dramatically reduce one or both and test again.

RickG

I got the stepper motor to work, the timing values I had were not right.

I thought I'd post the timing information for this driver in case some else needs it.

Driver M542T sold by OMC - Stepperonline
Step Time > 1800
Step Space > 1800
Direction Hold > 8000
Direction Setup > 6000

Thanks for all the help.
