Ethernet Smooth Stepper? was created by islander261
Hello
Has anyone gotten one of the Ethernet versions of these:
www.warp9td.com/index.php/products
to work with LinuxCNC?
I can't find any technical details about it so I assume this is relic of the Mach world. I know that CandCNC have products based on it,
candcnc.com/images/CoreCNC/Delta3b.pdf
that uses their proprietary implementation of LinuxCNC,
candcnc.com/images/downloads/CommandCNC.pdf
which is used with the above hardware which has an embedded ESS. I know they only sell this as part of complete systems.

The last pdf you posted says on the bottom that it is pre release and features may change slightly.
I have no doubt that they are _not_ using a smoothstepper with linuxcnc.
I'm sure they are using a MESANET Ethernet card.
I do doubt that the smoothstepper card will work with linuxcnc since
the smoothstepper does the trajectory planning on the card
and linuxcnc requires the planning done in the computer.

Ok
The photo of the new hardware clearly shows a ESS front and center. I understand what you are saying based on public information. I actually don't think the ESS can do any motion planning, pulse buffering yes. The pulse buffering has been a problem for plasma applications. From what has been posted on the plasma sites CandCNC and Warp9 have been working very closely together to fix some of the delay problems, the version used here may not even be publicly available. With most of the Mesa SW and firmware being available on the net they sure have a good road map. The ESS is an FPGA based devise.

The guy that built the linuxcnc screen for them is in the linuxcnc circle too.
I'm sure he is integrating a linuxcnc package for them.
Whether they will offer both, experimenting or transitioning I don't know.
If the ESS can be used with linuxcnc that would be great but I have never heard of anyone even trying.
linuxcnc does not support buffering in the card either.
