I have a Quik Switch 30 spindle in my BP Series 1 and adding an encoder was pretty trivial. Is your spindle similar to mine?

Does that work for rigid tapping, or do you need to use a floating head with that setup? I thought about doing some thing similar but was concerned that my mill has a little lash in the spindle.

I rigid tap with that. The Z axis follows the spindle. I still have the manual speed control so I run 900 on the speed and crank the manual down to about 200-300 RPM when tapping.
