Planning a lathe conversion was created by Robotwizard
Hello,
I'm planning a CNC lathe conversion. Need a CNC lathe that retains manual capabilities. I have a Clausing 4900 10" x 24" but it needs cross slide, compound slide, broken gears replaced etc. Having a hard time finding parts for it and I'm wondering if it is even a good candidate for my CNC conversion or if I should part it out and look at some sort of asian machine such as something of similar specs in the Weiss or Sieg line of products. Any thoughts on what to look for? Thanks

If you convert a Chinese lathe, it will still be a Chinese lathe. (I know, I have done it).
I am rather happier with my Holbrook conversion, but there is absolutely no need to get quite as carried-away as I did.

Addendum.. You won't need the compound if you convert to CNC.

I didn't realize the compound wouldn't be needed. Is there a special type of toolholder used in it's place then?

On my Chinese lathe I used a block of iron that I had lying about. (which I think was actually the compound slide of a lathe)
On the Holbrook I made a pattern and had a casting made .
