Does anyone have an idea what would cause a new install of Debian Wheezy with Linuxcnc 2.7.5 to freeze? It will freeze at any time in any program or no program running.
I'm running a Pentium 4 2400Mhz/400Mhz cpu with 1 gig ddr sdram pc1600
I thought it might be the video card (built in) so I added a pci video card and it still does it at random times.
Thanks
Orson

Bad iso image=> check md5sum
Bad power supply=> replace with a good one
Bad memory bank=> if more than one present, remove all but one and start computer, if it runs ok, repeat with other modules=> throw the malfunctioning one with a smile on your face
Bad memory controller=> replace motherboard or even better get another PC from ebay starting at 20$
Bad HDD=> when it freezes check the HDD light, if on, replace HDD
Before all this download linuxcnc 10.04 iso, check md5sum, test it, if it runs ok goto first line, if it does not start from the second line.
Regards,
Tom

I'll add, check the motherboard for bad capacitors (look for bulging, leaking or exploded) It is a common problem for electronics of the P4-Pentium D-Core2 era.

Did you run the latency test for an extended period of time? For very old hardware like a P4 you might try an older version of the operating system like the Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD it's only 10 years newer than the P4.
