sudo apt-get update fails

I have an 2.7.X installation that I haven't used in a few months. I powered it up today and tried to run Update Manager (and Synaptic) and neither will run, they pop up an error. When I run 'sudo apt-get update' I get the following error:

E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/linuxcnc.org_dists_wheezy_2.7-rtai_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.


I tried deleting the file /var/lib/apt/lists/linuxcnc.org_dists_wheezy_2.7-rtai_i18n_Translation-en (which is present and seems to have proper permissions) but just get:

Reading package lists... Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/linuxcnc.org_dists_wheezy_2.7-rtai_i18n_Translation-en%5fUS
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

How can I get the system to update?
