Yes, perfectly possible. I think that all you need to do is use your own Python program as the DISPLAY = in the INI. If that doesn't work (I think I have been told that it does, but haven't tied it) then a work-around is DISPLAY = halui and load your interface with a loadusr in the HAL file. (which I have tried)

Even if you don't want a GUI, you might find that starting with Gscreen is a good beginning.
