I have a new ISO for linux on my office Mac.
For a bootable usb to work.
1. Does it need to be the only file on the stick??
2. If other files can exist, do they need to be added after the disk is bootable??
3. Which system linux, Mac, or windows will be the easiest to use??
Years ago I have made lots of coffee coasters.

I recently gave up on trying to make a bootable USB for my particular LinuxCNC motherboard, and ended up buying a portable USB DVD drive for £22.
Making a bootable USB stick will over-write all data on the drive as a matter or course.
To write the .iso on a Mac use the dd command as-instructed for Linux.
Work out which disk the USB is using Disk Utility (it will show, it as "disk6" for example in the bottom right of the disk info section.
Once you know that you need to write to the _raw_ disk. If it was disk6 then the command is
dd if=/path/to/iso/file of=rdisk6 bs=1m
Make absolutely sure that you write to the correct disk, and be aware the write will take several minutes and that there is no feedback on progress.
